About HIV Testing

Positive Connections uses the 3rd Generation INSTI Test, which tests for HIV antibodies and shows results in just 2 minutes.

When a person is infected with a virus, the immune system responds by making antibodies. Antibodies show that a person has been infected.

It can take the body sometime after infection to produce enough antibodies show up on the test. This is called the "Window Period." For most people, enough antibodies will be present to test positive 3 months after infection--but it can take as many as 6 months. HIV CAN STILL BE TRANSMITTED DURING THE WINDOW PERIOD. If you think you have been exposed to HIV in the last 6 months, take precautions to prevent transmission (condoms) and test again to be sure.

What To Expect

Your test specialist will take you to a private screening room to complete the testing. For your HIV test they will stick your finger to take a small sample of blood from your finger to be tested. The test takes about 2 minutes to process. During this time, you will participate in a short counseling session using the RESPECT intervention--you'll learn about how HIV is transmitted, look at what has put you at risk, and develop a plan to reduce this risk in the future. You will be told your HIV result within 10 minutes.

For your Syphilis and Hepatitis C test we will draw blood from your arm. These results take about 5-7 business days to receive from the lab. For your Chlamydia and Gonorrhea test we will have you provide a urine sample in our restroom. These results take about 5-7 business days to receive from the lab. Reminder to come hydrated for your blood draw and urine sample!

Your test and counseling session will be totally confidential, judgement free, and educational. We are here to help!

If positive results are given, we refer you out to treatment. For Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, we most commonly refer to the health department, but we are also able to refer your results to your primary care provider should you choose to do so and have signed a release for. For the Syphilis test we will notify KDHE, and a Disease Intervention Specialist will contact you for treatment. For Hepatitis C, we will notify KDHE and Sara Garcia, the program manager for Hepatitis, will contact you for treatment. For HIV we will immediately contact KDHE. A Linkage to Care Coordinator and Disease Intervention Specialist will meet with you the same day to discuss treatment and give you wrap around supports to guide you through the process.

Who Should Get Tested?

HIV can infect anyone--of any race, age, gender, or sexual orientation--but some factors can contribute to higher risk, such as:

*Having multiple sex partners
*"Hooking up" with anonymous partners
*Engaging in oral, anal, or vaginal sex without a condom
*Sharing needles for injection drug use

The CDC recommends that all sexually active individuals be tested for HIV once a year. Individuals at higher risk of infection or transmission may consider testing more frequently.
